Our state has the good fortune to be part of the watersheds of two of the Great Lakes - Superior and Michigan. These lakes are essential to the economic and cultural identity of our region. However, the health of our Lakes today is seriously threatened by problems such as untreated sewage and invasive species. The good news is there are manageable solutions to these problems.
Gathering Waters Conservancy (GWC) and the Lake Michigan Shorelands Alliance (LMSA), with support from the Joyce Foundation, hosted The Great Lake Gatherings to provide an opportunity for us to to work together to preserve these unique shoreland and water resources for future generations. Collaborative forums took place in the Fall of 2008 in four communities along Lake Michigan where local initiatives are beginning to shape conservation action. Participants included key local stakeholders who enjoyed the benefits of land and water resources in their own backyards.
